The Hebon study facilitates scientific research into hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. Researchers can make use of the data collected within this study. To do so, they must submit a research proposal (HOP: Hebon Onderzoek Plan).
Researchers can submit a HOP using the HOP form. We also ask researchers to indicate which variables they need in the Hebon code books. Hebon has two code books: one for ID data, DNA information, and data on cancer diagnoses and treatment, and one for risk factors.
For your information: The Hebon questionnaire was updated in 2019. Some questions have been changed or removed, resulting in different variables for 2012-2013 (the old questionnaire) and 2019 (the new questionnaire).
If you have any questions about the HOP form, the code books or the various Hebon questionnaires, please contact hebon@nki.nl.
Research applications within Hebon fall into one of the categories below. The amount of work and support provided by Hebon varies per category, which affects the cost of an application.
Below are the four categories with a brief explanation.
HOP applications are assessed four times a year during the meetings of the Hebon Steering Group. The table below shows the deadlines for applications in 2026.
After submitting a HOP, it will be discussed at the next Steering Group meeting. Approximately one week after the Steering Group meeting, the researcher will receive the official assessment and any requests for additional information.
If the Steering Group approves the application, the researcher will be consulted to determine how and when the data will be delivered.
After data delivery and use of the Hebon research data, a HOP researcher must take Hebon authorship into account. In accordance with the Guidelines of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, the following applies to the distribution of authorship and co-authorship of the proposed publication(s):
The aim is to ensure that “Hebon” and all centres are represented in papers based on Hebon data, insofar as this is possible according to journal guidelines. In the case of international papers, “Hebon” is a natural person, so if one author may be listed, that is HEBON. If there are two authors, that is “Hebon” and the project leader involved, and if there are three or more authors: HEBON, the project leader and representative(s) of the centres according to a distribution weighted according to the number of participants in the study. If it is not possible to include “Hebon” as an author due to changes in the rules of the journal concerned or international collaboration, the executive committee will take a well-considered decision on this matter.
